Romance and Revolution
Programme William Walton - Cello Concerto Dmitry Shostakovich - Symphony No 10 in E minor The season concludes with the return of our Principal Conductor, Ryan Bancroft, alongside the masterful Steven Isserlis who will perform one of Waltons most romantic compositions, his Cello Concerto. We then turn to Shostakovichs terrifying, desperate and dark tenth symphony, which is ultimately triumphant in the face of impossible horrors. Considered by most to be a depiction of Stalins rule of Russia, it is testament to the composers legacy chronicling one of the most turbulent reigns in recent history, inspiring in its ability to find optimism in the bleakest of situations. An exhilarating end to the 21-22 season.
